Firenze!

Okay so I know I'm the worst blogger of all time, but I promise this post will make up for my weeks and weeks of neglect!

This weekend we went to Florence! Let me give you guys a Reader's Digest version of the greatness of this city:

Florence is the capital of Tuscany. Just under 400,000 people live within the city, but over 1.5 million live in the surrounding area {so it's pretty big}.

Ever hear of the Medici family? Ya know, the powerful 14th and 15th century bankers/patrons of the arts who ruled Italy and pretty much all of Europe? Well all of that went down in Florence. So yeah Florence is full of history and art and amazing museums {like the Uffizi...which I went to!}

Also, Florence is famous for a few things like Michelangelo's David {Yes, you know the one}, leather, steak, and Brunelleschi's dome,

So yeah, Florence is really cool and we had a wonderful time.

Rainy day on the Ponte Vechio.
Street artist outside the Uffizi.
David! {I wasn't supposed to take a picture...oops!}
David in drag...
Fake David I was allowed to take a picture of.
Lunch at "The Diner". American food never tasted so good.
Sometimes a girl just needs some pancakes :)

Most adorable toy store ever...it was fun :) {Also Pinocchio was written in Italia. Fun fact.}
We got dressed up to go to a concert where they sang different Opera arias. It was to die for.
This guy really wanted to be in my picture.
Is this not the cutest car you've ever seen?
We also frolicked around H&M like adolescents.
This is the duomo. It's cool.
The inside.
The view from the top.
CI AMIAMO FIRENZE!

So yeah, that's Florence! It's only a 60 minute bus ride from Siena, so I will most likely be back.

Stay classy friends.

Brittany's Guide to Roma {Best Guide You'll Ever Read. I'm a Pro.}

Today I woke up in Rome, packed up my bags and got on a bus headed to Siena, Toscana. We took a stop in a charming town called Orvieto with an amazing duomo. I took a nap for the rest of the bus ride and when I woke up, the hills of Tuscany were just outside my window!

I moved in with my little Italian host grandma. Her name is Rita, but she wants us to call her Nonna {Italian for "grandma"}. Nonna is an amazing cook. She made us some delicious pasta for il primo piatto. For the second course we had pecora, or lamb, and potatoes and tomatoes fresh from her garden! Nonna's cooking was better than anything I had in Rome.

Speaking of Rome, I've compiled a list of helpful tips of things that I learned first-hand in the two weeks I was there. These tips are tested and true.

Live 'em. Love 'em.

Plan in advance for travel time and lines at museums and famous sights.

Nighttime is the best time to explore the city. Rome is truly magical at night and it comes alive.

The metro is the most efficient way around the city.

Avoid eye contact with the accordion players on the metro. They will stand right in front of you and stare you down if they can tell you are entertained.

Always keep your bag in front of you on the metro.

When taking the train, always validate your ticket before boarding {props to Megan for knowing this one}.

The easiest way to get an Italian man to leave you alone is to tell him you are married. Two words: Sono sposata.

Italian police officers really don't make you feel any more safe than the creepy men you would want protection from. They are probably checking you out too.

You are going to get called beautiful and asked on more dates in your first few days in Rome than you ever will in all other times of your life combined. Enjoy it {just don't let on that you are enjoying it}.

Eat gelato everyday!

Don't be alarmed if you drink a lot of water and never have to pee. You are probably sweating it all out {Seriously I think I drank at least a gallon of water everyday and peed once before bed and once in the morning. TMI? Sorry.}. Drink A TON of water anyway. Gotta love that 95 percent humidity!

There are fountains of water everywhere. They are gorgeous and people drink from them all the time. The water is constantly flowing and super yummy. Bring a water bottle and refill here.

If you see something that you like, just buy it. You never know if/when you will find another like it.

Be daring when crossing the road. You won't get fined for j-walking. This will probably be the scariest part of Rome, but if you don't go for it, you will never cross the road!

Italian women have an amazing presence. When they walk into a room, you know they are there. This is a little intimidating at first, but you'll get used to it. You really have to embrace your inner diva if you want to convince others you are an Italian woman {this one is still difficult for me}.

Just tell people you are from Chicago or New York or L.A. or the closest big city to your hometown. Italians really don't care about Michigan or Utah.

Use the language as much as you can. Even though almost everyone in Rome speaks English, it's fun to try and they love you for it!

You'll never really be in culture shock because of all the English and American songs playing everywhere.

Spend more time taking everything in with your mind than with your camera. You'll never remember the way you felt when looking back at a picture if you never took the time to feel anything.

Enjoy everything. You have nothing to complain about...you're in Rome!

I seriously fell in love with Rome. It's funny to think that it probably won't even be my favorite part of the trip two months from now. I'm excited to see what kinds of adventures these next few weeks will hold!

{Sorry about the lack of pictures. You'll have to check my Facebook for now!}

Ciao amici :)

Desert Living: Not for the Faint of Heart

When I found out my family was moving to the desert a little less than two years ago, I was pretty upset about it.

Not only was I leaving some really cool people in Michigan behind, but I was going to miss going to the lake every summer. Let's not even mention how green Michigan is in the spring and summer compared to the brown in New Mexico and Arizona.

Turns out that living in the desert has been a lot more fun than I thought it was going to be. I've also met some pretty cool people here over the past two summers. The move taught me a lot about making the most out of every situation. And I learned that the decisions you give your mom a really hard time about, turn out to be okay. She really does know what's best.

Now don't get me wrong, I would still take a day out on the water over a day doing almost anything else every time. And I do NOT claim to be an expert at living in the desert, but it sure has been an adventure.

A few days ago, Gabby and I went exploring and we found some pretty cool stuff {mostly cactus}. Check it out!

Cactus type #1...not sure what it's called. I told you I'm not an expert!

Cactus type #2.
Pretty flowers on a... {yep you guessed it} cactus.
Yummy cactus pears. Not really sure if these are edible or not.
Really tall cactus...
Gabby playing the drums. But not really, 'cause they will stab her.

We found some pretty creepy stuff out there too.
Does this random shovel seem sketchy to anyone else?
Whoops! Glad we weren't caught!

Summer 2012: No Regrets

Kay so upon reflecting on this past summer I've decided that it contained some pretty awesome adventures if I do say so myself.

The motto was no regrets. And that's exactly what I had.

I want to share with all of you a "How to Have an Excellent Summer Guide 101".  I'm not saying there aren't other ways to do it, but if you follow these simple instructions, you really can't go wrong. Oh and be prepared for a photo overload.

1. Get yourself some awesome friends. Try your best not to hire any because then you have less moneys for activities later. And don't forget to keep in touch with long distance friends who you probably won't get to see all summer {I pretty much failed at this one :( }.

Seriously though, this will make or break your whole summer {so make sure they are good}.

2. Go to every outdoor concert you can get a hold of. Warped Tour is a good place to start and then hit up all the free local ones for start-up bands. Who knows? Maybe you'll find a new favorite.
He's the only one who likes my eagle shirt. And I'm never throwing it away now.

Tom Petty cover bands are better than they sound.

3. Go camping and be outdoorsy. It's super fun.

Nature is cool. Hiking is cool. S'mores are cool.

4. Dye your hair purple or red. Or blue or pink. Even if it is going to wash out the next day. It makes you feel awesome...not to mention look awesome.

Really though, don't knock it till you try it.

5. Assist your friends in gender reassignment for the making of their music video.

Then appear for a cameo in said video. The link for the video can be found here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=TSFEKK3eJ8s

 6. It's not possible to get half-off shakes at Sonic TOO many times. Seriously. INDULGE!

Kay so these are Strawberry Slushes, but they are still delicious.

7. Don't be afraid to act like a kid.
So draw on the ground with chalk...

Eat your ice cream in the train {and no Mr. Police Officer we are NOT too old for this}...

Wear the mustaches...

And get the sparkle tats {they are definitely worth every penny}.

8. Take up a new hobby and then perform it at your ward talent show.

If you've never tried longboarding, you should!
Synchronized longboarding is even better. So grab a buddy and give it a go.

You can watch our talent show act here:

9. Go to weddings. Cause love is in the air and you get to dress up and eat cake and dance.
What's not to love?

10. Make time for your family. They are the ones who will be there for you no matter what. They have to love you despite all of your...let's call them "quirks".

This summer my little sister practically gave me a heart attack when she practically had a heart attack. It all reminded me just how much I love my family and how I value every chance I get to spend time with them.

So I got to watch my big sister graduate. I explored the desert with my lil' sis. I judged an iron chef challenge between my dad and my brother. I baked delicious apple pie cupcakes with my soon-to-be step-mom. And I became a furniture buying connoisseur with my mom and step-dad. I wouldn't trade the time or the memories for anything. I feel so blessed to have such a loving and supportive family. I am so grateful for them everyday.

Yeah graduation! She's a rockstar.
Don't be fooled by the fact that this looks like a Dr. Seuss tree. It is indeed a cactus.
I wish I had more pictures of my fambam, but I still have another week until school starts!

So kids, I hope your summer was as awesome as mine. Good luck with your semester, I hope it's rad!
